Reading Labels – What You Need To Know To Make Best Choices

Navigating the aisles of grocery stores these days feels like a maze of conflicting information. How to discern between products called “natural” or “healthy” and those truly adhering to the best practices of good nutrition? Read on to find out which labels and seals to look for on your quest to healthy diet.

  • Non-GMO Project Verified: The Non-GMO Project Verified seal is the most consumer trusted non-GMO label. Non-GMO Project’s mission is “to preserve and build sources of non-GMO products, educate consumers, and provide verified non-GMO choices”.
  • USDA Organic: Certified organic produce is grown without using pesticides and herbicides. GMOs are prohibited from certified organic products, which means farmers are not allowed to grow produce from GMO seeds, their animals can’t eat GMO feed, and organic food producers can’t use GMO ingredients. Ideally, you would want to buy only organic produce but the least you can do is to follow EWG (Environmental Working Group) guidelines and their Food Scoring. Every year a list known as Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen is published to help consumers make smart decisions.
  • Raw: Produce used must not be processed at temperature over 118 degrees Fahrenheit, which guarantees that the beneficial nutrients are alive and enzymes are bio-available.
  • Gluten-Free: Manufacturers of products claiming to be GF (gluten free) must have a gluten-free compliance plan and undergo onsite inspections of their production and handling facilities.
  • Soy-free: All products with this symbol are guaranteed to contain 5ppm of soy protein or less.
  • Vegan/Plant Based: Designed for consumers who care not only about their health but also for the well being of animals, and the future of our planet. Vegan products are meant to support and supplement common nutritional gaps including B12, iron and trace minerals.
